Organic Oatstraw (Avena sativa)

Botanical Name: Avena sativa
Origin: Croatia, United States, Bulgaria
Certification: Organic & Kosher
Processing: Non-ETO • Non-Irradiated • Non-GMO

Our Organic Oatstraw is harvested from the vibrant green stems and leaves of the oat plant, gathered while the grass is still lush and nutrient-rich. While the mature seed becomes the familiar oat found in kitchens worldwide, oatstraw refers to the nourishing aerial parts of the plant, traditionally valued in Western herbal practices.

A member of the grass family, oat plants feature upright stems, long blade-like leaves, and delicate flowering spikelets. When the plant is young, the developing seed exudes a white milky substance, often referred to as “milky oats.”

Cultivated since ancient times, oats were first domesticated in the Fertile Crescent and later spread throughout Europe, where they thrived in cooler, wetter climates. Today, oat plants are grown worldwide, both for their nutritious grain and for the mineral-rich green tops used in herbal preparations.

When dried, oatstraw has a mild, grassy aroma and produces a smooth, earthy infusion with subtle sweetness.

We would like to acknowledge, with gratitude and appreciation, that the land on which we walk and live is the traditional territories of the Sinixt, the Syilx, and the Ktunaxa peoples, and is home to many other indigenous persons, including the Inuit and Metis.
